The period from 1947 to 1985 saw the most fruitful activities and development in the sphere of the library activities in India. It was the  during  this period that the Indian librarians really awakened from their slumber and consciously assumed their role in the development of the country by contributing their mite to the  advancement of knowledge. Although the government  of India , and its various  institutions  like the University Grants Commission and Raja Ram Mohan Roy Foundation and a number of educational and cultural bodies supported the cause of the  development  of libraries. The position of the college libraries is not so well. The college library has to operate in an environment where educational administrators, teachers and students often fail to recogine the role of the library in relation to the educational objectives of the college to which  it is attached.
